About Algoma University

Algoma University is a publicly funded university located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, offering over 30 academic programs across three campuses. Known for its intimate learning environment, Algoma U provides one of the best student-to-faculty ratios in Ontario, meaning you'll get personalized attention and genuine mentorship from your professors.

The university's scenic campus sits on the former site of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, along the beautiful St. Marys River. This historic setting gives Algoma a unique sense of place and a deep commitment to reconciliation, Indigenous education, and cross-cultural understanding.

A Rich History

Algoma's story began in 1965 as Algoma College, a small affiliate of Laurentian University. For decades it operated as Algoma University College, steadily growing its academic offerings and student community. In 2008, a major milestone was reached when the Algoma University Act granted it full autonomous university status, making it Ontario's 19th university. In 2021, the Act was amended to authorize Algoma to grant graduate degrees, marking a new chapter of growth and ambition.

Throughout its history, Algoma has maintained a strong relationship with the Shingwauk Education Trust and Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, one of nine provincially recognized Indigenous institutes of higher learning. This partnership is central to the university's identity and its commitment to truth, healing, and reconciliation.
